Makes calculations more readable when setting the result of a calculation to nothing or NULL , where as the double quotes may be not as noticeable when debugging. Or in evaluating the current state of a field or variable, if are truly NULL.

Many times you want to clear a date field setting the field to NULL is more effective the set field to "" in some cases may leave the ? behind.

Hahahaha... Oh I see what you did there ;)

In all seriousness though as weird looking and pointless as the CF may seem, it does actually come in handy. Taking into account that you don't need the parentheses for functions that don't take any parameters (something I didn't actually know until I just tried it) and that you will likely use this several thousand times in your solution, this becomes a pretty useful tool for code legibility and I personally believe (haha deja vu), that it is more than justified in it's vehicular existance ;)
